THC VS CBD Part 1
Medical marijuana is a powerful new option that is available for treatments, and it’s a marijuana that will not give you a high. There are countless stories showing and proving that when used properly, medical marijuana can treat health issues. Take Jackson Leyden for example. In 2011, just after Jackson had turned eight years old, he began to have seizures several times a day. He was a healthy and active kid, he practiced taekwondo, played lacrosse, played baseball, and participated in activities a normal eight year old would. When the seizures first started, they would mainly be short, consisting of thirty seconds of staring into space. But then he also experienced more severe seizures where he would collapse and sometimes injure himself. Over the course of the next two years of his life, he would be hospitalized around fifty times. This resulted in Jackson missing most of the fourth and fifth grade.
His parents were of course distraught. They took him to go and see over twenty doctors, traveling all over the country. The doctors tried dozens and dozens of medications on Jackson. None of which seemed to work. In the 2014, the Leydens were at the end of their rope, they did not know what to do. This is when they decided to try marijuana to see if it would help Jackson. Medical marijuana is legal where the Leyden’s live, and they did have a doctor who was willing to give Jackson his first dose of cannabis. The results were amazing. Within a few days Jackson was hardly having any seizures at all. After a few months Jackson stopped taking all of his other medication. The strain of cannabis that Jackson takes does not make him high at all. This specific strain has high levels of CBD, which is one of the main molecules in marijuana. The other main molecule in marijuana is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is what will alter your mind, giving you the high, CBD does not.
Through the years, researchers have conducted studies which show that THC is helpful in treating pain, nausea and loss of appetite. They initially thought that CBD was biologically inactive in human beings. But over the past decade, research has shown that CBD is actually very useful. It can be used to treat epilepsy, anxiety, schizophrenia, heart disease, cancer and a range of other illnesses.
Jackson continues to use marijuana everyday. His diagnosis is still undetermined, and he still has seizures. But these seizures are way less severe and only happen every week or two, versus the two hundred a month he was having before he started using cannabis. Jackson is able to be in school and is feeling well enough to go on hikes and bike rides with his family. Being able to use marijuana has allowed Jackson to live his life and improve his quality of life. Jackson is only one of the thousands of people who are using high-CBD marijuana. This is a powerful compound that works on many patients and has positive results.
